Hazardous Waste and Emergency Response

In the event of a spill involving biological materials, you should:

Wear appropriate PPE, especially gloves.
Remove any broken glass with tongs and place in a container of bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) or isopropyl alcohol. After 10 minutes, remove the broken glass and place it in a sharps container or broken glass box.
After the glass has been removed, liberally apply a bleach solution or isopropyl alcohol to the area affected by the spill and cover with paper towels.
Let stand for 10 minutes to allow for the destruction of the microorganisms (do not leave unattended).
Wipe spill and place paper towels and gloves in trash can.
Thoroughly wash hands.
Report the incident to the campus Environmental Health and Safety Office and/or Public Safety.
