ADMISSION STANDARDS AND PROGRAMS

MINIMUM ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS: 1997-2001

The revised admission policy approved by the Board of Regents in 1996 is being phased in from 1997-2001. Effective Summer 2001 all of the requirements will apply.

Regular admission to programs leading to the baccalaureate degree requires. . .

• Graduation from a high school accredited by a regional accrediting association (such as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) or the Georgia Accrediting Commission or from a public school regulated by a school system and state department of education
• Completion of the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or the American College Testing (ACT) Assessment Program
• Completion of sixteen specified CPC units
  
  • Students applying to state colleges and state universities and to regional universities must also present two additional academic CPC units
  • Applicants to research universities must present credit for four additional academic CPC units
• A designated score on the freshman Index (FI), which is based on a combination of a student's SAT I or ACT scores and high school grade point average (HSGPA). The freshman index is:
  
  

  FI = 500 x (HSGPA) + SAT I Verbal + SAT I Math or
  FI = 500 x HSGPA + (ACT Composite x 42) + 88

• A minimum SAT I Verbal score of 430 and Mathematics score of 400 (or ACT equivalent) for admission to a university (research, regional, or state). Admission to a two-year college requires the minimum SAT I Verbal score of 330 and Mathematics score of 310 (or ACT equivalent).

Satisfaction of these minima does not guarantee admission to any University System institution since institutions may establish both higher and additional admissions requirements.

JOINT ENROLLMENT/ EARLY ADMISSION PROGRAMS/POST-SECONDARY OPTIONS

The University System of Georgia recognizes the need to provide academically talented high school students with opportunities for acceleration of their formal academic programs. This recognition has led to the development of two organized programs: 1) a joint enrollment program in which the student, while continuing his/her enrollment in high school as a junior or senior, enrolls in courses for college credit; and 2) an early admission program in which the student enrolls as a full-time college student following completion of the junior year in high school. Minimum admissions requirements are 1) a minimum combined SAT score of 970 or equivalent ACT scores, 2) a minimum cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or a numerical average of 80 or higher in academic subjects, 3) exemption of all Learning Support requirements for early admission, 4) written recommendation from the high school principal or counselor, and 5) written consent of parent or guardian (if the student is a minor). In Fall 1998, 2,305 students were enrolled through the joint enrollment program, an increase of 6 percent since 1997.

SENIOR CITIZEN ADMISSIONS

Pursuant to a Georgia constitutional amendment passed in 1976, Georgia residents, 62 years of age or older, may enroll as a regular or auditing student in degree credit work on a "space available" basis without payment of fees, except for supplies, laboratory or shop fees. Students must meet all system and institution undergraduate or graduate school admission requirements and follow the same program as other degree-seeking students. The program does not apply to Dental, Medical, Veterinary, or Law Schools. In Fall 1998, 343 persons were enrolled through the program.
