Teacher Preparation Programs designed for Paraprofessionals
There are many pathways to becoming a Georgia certified teacher. For those who serve as paraprofessionals, supporting certified teachers in classrooms, or who work in a similar capacity in a classroom, the University System of Georgia institutions have a number of programs available that will work around your schedule to help earn the credentials necessary to get certified. Below you will find programs available across USG institutions that serve this exact purpose. The programs are separated into four groups:
- Bachelor's Programs in Early Childhood Education (Birth through Kindergarten), Elementary Education, or Elementary/Special Education (dual certification)
- Bachelor's Programs in Special Education (General and/or Adapted Curriculum)
- Bachelor's Programs in Middle Grades Education or Secondary Education
- Master's Programs in Elementary, Special, or Middle Grades Education
Note that all listed degree programs are approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission for teacher certification as listed in the “certification area” column (grade bands are listed in parentheses).
These programs make up only a small portion of education degrees and certificates offered across the University System of Georgia. The programs listed below include only those with cohorts/programming that is geared specifically toward paraprofessionals looking to get certified. To see the full array of programs offered across the system, please visit the Georgia Degrees Pay Academic Program Finder at https://www.usg.edu/academic-program-finder. Users can filter programs in that tool by degree level, specific majors, modality, and location. Interested in your return on investment? The Georgia Degrees Pay tools also allows you to compare cost of attendance and future earnings potential for different degrees/major at each of these institutions.
For the programs below, clicking on the institution name will direct you to a program-specific webpage where you can learn more about the program. Selecting the "click for more information" button will bring up additional information about class meetings (if any) and field experiences. All programs leading to licensure have field experience requirements (sometimes also called internships, practicums, clinicals, residencies, or capstones) where teacher candidates must spend a minimum number of hours in school classrooms and/or other settings where they can observe, practice, and demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to be certified teachers. For current paraprofessionals, some of these hours can often be in the candidate's regular classroom but there may also be requirements for field experiences outside of the candidate's regular classroom. These details and requirements are provided below for each program.
Be sure to also review the Georgia Professional Standards Commission's paraprofessional webpage and steps to teach webpage for more information on transitioning from a paraprofessional to a certified teacher.
